MDS stands for Minimum Data Set. MDS is a key tool in the process of assessing the capabilities of residents in a nursing care facility. MDS Coordinators are the certified individuals who take these assessments and use the results to formulate individual care plans for residents. Most MDS Coordinators are licensed nurses who are trained through off-site training programs (like MDS LTC Training and Consulting).
How Do You Become A MDS Coordinator?
Most MDS Coordinators start their career as registered nurses (RN) or licensed practical nurses (LPN). After becoming a licensed nurse, the individual will apply to take a formal MDS Coordinator training program in order to become educated on MDS regulations, job functions, etc. After completing the formal MDS education-training program, the individual will take the Resource Utilization Group (RUG) exam. Nurses must complete RUG training every two years to be able to submit forms for Texas Medicaid payments.
What Is The Salary For MDS Coordinators?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for MDS Coordinators is $59,961. This generally ranges from $42,000 to $77,000 on the higher end. Job opportunities for MDS Coordinators are expected to increase by 19% for registered nurses and 25% for licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses.
What Are The Daily Job Functions Of A MDS Coordinator?
The objective of a MDS coordinator is to promote positive physical and emotional well-being among nursing facility residents. This means that the MDS Coordinator will spend an ample amount of their time visiting with patients and assessing their mood, behavioral patterns, cognitive ability, and other needs. These assessments will be written down using a Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI).
The information gathered from the assessments helps the nursing facility formulate individualized care plans for the residents. This includes support from outside facilities like social services, dieticians, rehab facilities, and medical staff. It is the MDS Coordinators job to ensure that these required plans are efficiently and effectively implemented. They are also required to make sure the care plans comply with Medicare requirements.
